CHRISTIANE SPANGSBERG

Pleasure

07 May - 13 May 2022

Christiane Spangsberg is a Danish artist known for her timeless and minimalist interpretations of the people around her. Since 2014, Christiane has been inspired by the philosophical thinking of Beardsley on “The Theory of Aesthetic Value”, which in short assumes that aesthetics is created by three composite properties; unity, complexity and intensity. These three characteristics are taken into account in all of Christiane’s works and are therefore the cornerstone of her creative practice.

Choice of materials, color palette and composition are all carefully studied in Christiane’s creative practice. Options are carefully assessed based on the thesis of complexity and unity. In 2015 it was clear that a color palette should define Christiane’s work going forward. The choice was between three colours; one beige and two dark blue. Christiane made several works with these colors which can be seen in her very early work, but ultimately ended up with the dark blue color anthraquinone being the cornerstone of her work. Chrstiane only started working on canvas in 2019, which can be seen in the exhibition ‘Garden of Eden’. Since then, Christiane has used canvas as an important choice of material to create cohesion and calm in her works.
